Bohermore National School

About Our School

Bohermore National School is a co-educational primary school with a Catholic ethos, under the patronage of the Archbishop of Cashel & Emly.

We currently have four mainstream classrooms, three special classes catering for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and one early intervention class. Our team also includes one full-time Special Education Teacher (SET) and one part-time SET. In total, there are 10 teachers, 17 Special Needs Assistants (SNAs), five bus escorts, and one secretary, bringing our dedicated staff team to 32.

Our History

The “Old School” at Bohermore opened its doors in 1859 with just two rooms: one classroom and one teacher’s residence. Each room had an open fireplace, but there was no running water or electricity. Children brought fuel and turf to keep the classroom fire burning, with the turf piled along the gable end of the school.

Today, the Old School continues to serve the community and is home to the early morning drop-off service, preschool, and afterschool care, catering for both our pupils and the wider parish.

School Development

In 1991, the current school building replaced the two-classroom prefab that had been connected to the Old School.

In 2020, a modern extension was completed at the rear of the building, providing an ASD classroom with toilet and shower facilities, a withdrawal room, staff room, staff toilets, and an office.

A further extension was added in 2022, comprising two modular mainstream classrooms and one SEN classroom. We are delighted to share that approval has since been granted for a permanent extension, which will provide high-quality, purpose-built learning spaces for our pupils.

Our School Today

When Bohermore National School first opened in 1859, there were 53 pupils on roll. Today, 166 years later in 2025, the school proudly caters for 100 pupils. In October 2024, we marked a very special milestone, celebrating 165 years of education in Bohermore.

Bohermore National School is located at the western end of the Archdiocese, within the Parish of Ballybricken & Bohermore, just 5.8 miles from Limerick City Centre.
